‘1945’, a new vision on the Holocaust, in La 2

Adaptation of the short novel by Gábor T. Szántó, who, together with the director of the film, Ferenc Török (Istanbul, Overnight), has participated in the creation of the libretto.

On a sweltering day in August 1945, the inhabitants of a town prepare for the wedding of the son of a city official. Meanwhile, two Orthodox Jews arrive at the town’s train station with some mysterious boxes. The city council official fears that they are heirs to the Jews who were kicked out of the town and hopes that they will reclaim the property that was unjustly taken from them, property that had been looted from them during World War II. Other villagers fear that more survivors will come, threatening the property and possessions that they now claim as their own.

1945 is a drama directed by veteran director Ferenc Török, author of works such as “Overnight” and “Moszkva tér”. The twenty-second film by the Hungarian director has the participation in the script of Gábor T. Szántó. He is a novelist and essayist who is one of the key figures in Hungarian culture and belongs to a generation of postwar Jewish writers who have helped keep the debate on Jewish identity alive after the Holocaust. With this film, an adaptation of his own story, he signs his first film work.

The film delves into the theme of historical guilt after World War II. “There is and was a sentiment against the Jews that did not disappear with the Holocaust,” Török said. “Only a year before, from many towns like the one in the film, they had taken hundreds of thousands of Jews. People did not know where or to what, but they did imagine that they would never see them again. And then, they got in in their homes, in their stores, and they stole everything they had, “he continues.

The story is not real, although it draws on the reality lived by many Hungarian peoples of the time to create a film that awakens in the viewer the feeling of closeness to the Jews.

Péter Rudolf is the protagonist of the feature film, which to prepare for the role had to gain 15 kg. He is accompanied in the cast by Bence Tasnádi, Tamás Szabó Kimmel anddóra Sztarenki, among others.
